The issue

Job Services Australia (JSA) services are not meeting the recruitment and workforce needs of employers and industry.

That was the clear message the Australian Government received from businesses during a consultation process conducted over the past 12 months.

This feedback overwhelmingly indicated that JSA services had been too transactional, not strategic enough and that more effort needed to be put into building long term partnerships that provided businesses with appropriately skilled entry level staff.

The solution

Job Futures, one of Australia’s largest not-for-profit JSAs, has met this challenge head on with the introduction of a new workforce development and recruitment model, Hit the Ground Running,  that firmly places the workforce needs of employers, businesses and industry at the centre.

The Hit the Ground Running model is all about leveraging:

  • the 25,000+ potential candidates that Job Futures has on their books;
  • their extensive geographic footprint; and
  • the various funding available to skill and train candidates prior to them starting a job.

Hit the Ground Running is also all about making sure that candidates have the right attitudes, behaviours and skill sets to be productive from day one on the job. This saves both time and money and avoids unecessary disruption in the workplace.

The difference

In my experience, having such an extensive and broad potential candidate pool, integrated with customised pre-employment training and work experience, is a key missing ingredient from many entry-level workforce recruitment models.

This is what makes Hit the Ground Running such a valuable model and why I am really excited to be involved.

Kris McCue’s role

Job Futures has engaged me as a workforce development and stakeholder engagement specialist to:

  • talk to and work with employers, businesses and industry across Australia to understand what their workforce development and recruitment needs are and how Job Futures can work with them more effectively;
  • work with the Job Futures’ Hit the Ground Running team to design a customised pilot program to demonstrate the effectiveness of the HTGR model; and
  • evaluate the success of the pilot program and build long term partnerships that result in sustainable jobs for candidates and reliable workforce pipelines for businesses.

How to get involved

I would like to talk with as many businesses and organisations as possible over the coming months and will be contacting employers to schedule a meeting to develop my understanding of their needs and start the customisation process.
